A modified bitumen roof system is actually a hybrid built-up roof. It has the benefits of the built in redundancy of the build-up roof, as well as the added strength, UV resistance and flexibility of a modified membrane. The membrane consists of an asphalt and polymer blend which allows the asphalt to take on characteristics of the polymer.
There are several surfacing options for this system which include:
- a factory applied mineral surface
- a gravel surface laid in bitumen
- a liquid applied coating that is typically reflective in nature.
Versatility is one of the most significant advantages of modified bitumens. These products can be torched, mopped, or cold applied, depending on the needs of the project. They can be also used alone in one or two-ply applications, or with conventional asphalt built-up roof systems as a cap sheet and/or flashing material. Modified bitumens are an excellent material for repairing existing bituminous roofs.
