Built-Up Roofs
Most buildings with flat or nearly-flat roofs are topped with built-up roofing, consisting of multiple layers of felts, fabrics or mats saturated with bitumen installed rooftop in alternating solid moppings of hot bitumen (asphalt or coal tar) or cold adhesives.

The top layer of asphalt on build-up roofs is covered with gravel mineral cap sheets, or a smooth weather-resistant coating,  which serves to hold the roofing material down and protect it from damage by ultraviolet sunlight. Light-colored gravel also acts to reflect the sun's heat. Built-up roofs can last up to 20 years, depending on the severity of the weather.

There are many applications of the various membranes and surfacing materials. The professionals at Fairchild Roofing can evaluate your roof and give you a custom specification, designed to meet your needs.
