Advantages of Metal Roofing

Metal roofs, including metal shingles (which can appear similar to wood shingles) offer several advantages over conventional roofing materials.

Expected life. Properly installed, a metal roof can last the life of your home, repelling water, surviving strong winds and easily handling heavy snow. Metal is also not susceptible to fire, mildew, insects or rot. Exceptional warranties are available with many metal roof applications.

Weight. Compared to tile or concrete tile, metal roofing is lightweight. Certain types of metal shingle systems may be applied over existing roofs without the need for additional structural support. If you're building a house or an addition, you can often downsize or reduce the number of roof support members.

Fire resistance. Metal roofs are noncombustible, allowing them to hold a Class A fire rating (the most resistant). Some of a roof's classification is dependent upon the materials under the surface that could catch fire in intense heat, so some metal roofs applied over an old roof may be given a lower rating.

Heat conduction. Metal can reduce midday heat gain, since it reflects radiant heat from the sun. Some systems include dead-air space between the metal and roof deck, thereby increasing energy efficiency.

Minimal roof pitch. Metal roofing materials can usually be installed on slightly  pitched roofs without fear of leaks.
Ease of installation. Metal roofing materials are typically available in multi-shingle sections or in sheets, making for faster installation.

Many of the traditional drawbacks to metal roofs have been lessened with modern techniques and technologies, including noise and denting. While metal roofs cost more to install, homeowners who remain in their houses for many years can reap savings.
